Taipei’s Semiconductor Crowd Gets a Dating Show

Taiwan’s semiconductor industry runs the world and it’s been pulling in South Asian engineers at an increasing rate. TSMC, MediaTek, and the broader Hsinchu Science Park ecosystem have brought Indian professionals to the island, many of whom live in or around Taipei on weekends even if they work down south during the week. NTU and NTHU attract Indian graduate students and researchers. The community is technical, well paid, and spread thin across the island.

Garam Masala Dating is the #1 live South Asian dating show and singles mixer from NYC. Real blind dates on stage, two hosts, a live audience, and a mixer. Taipei’s night market culture and vibrant social scene make it receptive to creative events. The city is friendly, walkable, and packed with things to do. What it lacks is anything specifically for the South Asian singles who’ve made Taiwan home.

The desi community in Taiwan is at an interesting stage: large enough that people can find an Indian restaurant and a Diwali celebration, but small enough that everyone who’s been here more than a year has met everyone else. The dating scene defaults to apps that don’t work well in Chinese language markets, coworker introductions, or accepting that you’ll sort it out when you "eventually move back." A live event rejects that resignation.

Taipei’s Zhongxiao Dunhua, Xinyi, and Da’an districts have the nightlife and the venue infrastructure. The MRT makes the entire city accessible. Indian food options in Gongguan (near NTU) and scattered across the city serve as informal community touchpoints. A dating show would be the first dedicated social event for desi singles in Taiwan.
