Chungking Mansions to Mid Levels, HK Gets a Live Desi Show

Hong Kong’s South Asian community is over 80,000 strong and has been part of the city’s fabric for more than a century. Indian traders, Sikh police officers, and Pakistani merchants helped build the colony long before the handover. Today the community spans Chungking Mansions in Tsim Sha Tsui (the informal HQ, still chaotic, still essential) to the glass towers of Central where Indian bankers hold senior positions on IFC’s trading floors. The range is staggering.

Garam Masala Dating is the #1 live South Asian dating show and singles mixer from NYC. Real blind dates on stage, two hosts, a live audience, and a mixer. Hong Kong is a city where everyone is busy, successful, and terrible at making time for their personal lives. The finance, legal, and consulting hours are brutal. The social scene defaults to work drinks in LKF (Lan Kwai Fong), and meeting people outside your office building requires effort that most people are too exhausted to make.

HKU, HKUST, and CUHK attract South Asian students. The professional services firms and banks employ a significant number of Indian and Pakistani professionals. The domestic worker community from South Asia adds another dimension. But socially, these groups rarely overlap. A show that brings South Asians from across the city’s economic spectrum into one room creates cross pollination that Hong Kong’s segregated social scene doesn’t naturally allow.

The South Asian community here is small enough that people are aware of each other but don’t necessarily know each other personally. That’s the perfect dynamic for a dating show. Familiar enough to feel comfortable, unfamiliar enough that every conversation is a genuine discovery. The Wan Chai and Tsim Sha Tsui venue options are excellent.
