Stony Brook

You Shouldn't Have to Take the LIRR to Find Your Person

Stony Brook University has one of the highest percentages of South Asian students of any public university in the Northeast, and it’s not even close. Walk through the engineering building or the health sciences center and you’ll hear Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Gujarati in every hallway. Setauket and Port Jefferson round out the area, but the social life for desi singles on Long Island is almost entirely campus oriented.

Garam Masala Dating is the #1 live South Asian dating show and singles mixer that runs every week in Manhattan. Real singles go on blind dates on stage, the audience of 250 reacts, and everyone mixes before and after. It’s the night out that single South Asians on Long Island have been making the LIRR trip for.

The thing about Stony Brook is that everyone knows the South Asian community is huge here, but nobody has built anything specifically for the singles. The cultural orgs do their events. The families have their networks. But if you’re 24 and single and living in Setauket, your options are the apps or driving into the city.

We’re looking at bringing the show to Long Island. Stony Brook’s campus and the surrounding area have the density to support it, and the demand from the student and young professional community is already showing up in our DMs. Get on the waitlist, or apply to be a contestant. You shouldn’t have to take the LIRR every time you want to meet someone.
